Web Production

The means of web production
are a lot more
freely available than print
production, which means
that people with no formal
web education can
publish web texts.

There’s also a lot of bad
print design out there.

The Importance of Navigation

Better intra-site navigation
and better site maps may
tip the balance slightly
back in favor of longer
stays, but it’s safest to assume
that users’ visits to
any individual website will
become ever shorter.

XHTML

XHTML is the newest version of HTML. We refer to XHTML and
HTML interchangeably.
The history of HTML at W3C starts with HTML 3.2, code named
Wilbur, which was followed a few years later by HTML 4.0, then
HTML 4.01. HTML 4.01 is the last version of HTML, and is also
the final W3C specification to define the semantics of markup.
XHTML 1.1 has slighly improved the semantics of HTML 4.01

Website Design

The web is mainly different in the fact that it is, or at
least can be completely dynamic, where as print ads or
billboards or mailings are static in their nature. Once an
ad or billboard or mailing has been sent out, that’s it,
typos and all it’s not gonna change, people will look at
it once or twice or however often they pass the sign on
the street.

The web is dynamic. A company has a website as
a presence building tool and they can use the same
address(url, domain name) to keep customers informed
of their business/products/services yet the content is
or at least can be always changing.. A customer/etc
can go to the same place over and over and expect to
see new or updated information.

There are still many print designers who have migrated
to web design.

Site designers (or owners) are afraid of not making
every single last bit of content available to readers: this
results in some vast, unnavigable pages.
The web’s still a very young medium.

Print will prove to be a positive and negative influence
on web design. The average web designer
could probably benefit from a design education. And
the average print designer could probably learn to be
more responsive to evolving technology, the way the
web demands.
